Contact idenitifcation procedure in modern Royal Navy

when: early 1950s

where: real world

terms searched: none. I have no idea where this would be described, or the magic key-words to find it.

Anyone out there current/former bridge crew for an RN surface ship?

We've all seen the generic American submarine movie, which is practically guaranteed to have a moment like

"CONN, SONAR! New contact, high speed screws bearing one one seven range 9500 and closing!"

I want to have a similar moment in the Royal Navy involving surface ships and radar. Is there an approved/commonly-used formula for this? And what would happen if the vessel fails to respond to a radio hail?
