Name for a Royal Caretaker?
I'm working on a story that's a fusion with an old Russian fairy tale my grandmother used to tell me. The story itself is set at an undisclosed time in an undisclosed place (probably 17th or 18th century Europe for argument's sake, but it's not really necessary to the story). My main character is a prince who lost his parents when he was very young, and has since been in the care of the family's most loyal servant.
What would this servant be called? I remember there being a word or title for a person that cared for young royalty and took care of all royal business until the royal became of age to take charge on their own, but I can't for the life of me remember what the word is. I was thinking it was something along the lines of "praetor", but that's either a commander of the ancient Roman army, or an elected Roman official.
Googling things like "royal caretaker", "stand in for royalty", and "person in charge of young royalty" has led me to cemetery jobs, babysitting gigs, and random businesses. While I'd love to work in a cemetery, it's not very helpful at the moment!
