hotels in victorian london
I am writing a fic involving time travel, and a section of it is set in London in the 1860s. The characters need a place to stay temporarily, and that is where my question comes in.
I've looked at quite a few books about the era and used Google (searching things like "hotels in Victorian London", "hotels in London 1860s", replacing "hotels" with words like "inn"), and what I know is that hotels and other such places existed and people stayed in them, but I can't find any details about what they were actually like. (The best I've come up with are the modern hotels furnished in the Victorian style, which is... not much help at all.)
Would there have been separate rooms? If so, would they have been like modern places, where there might be just one bed or two? Would it be more communal with multiple beds in a larger room, so strangers would all be lumped together? Would it be unusual for the characters (two men) to stay together in a single room? Would there have been an opportunity for meals along with lodging? This is also keeping in mind that the characters don't have much money, so they wouldn't be staying anywhere fancy. (Would such a place then be pretty gross? As in, not very clean?)
