[ANON POST] Organizations active in the 1848 revolutions in Germany

Googled a whole bunch about 1848 and read some of Engels' accounts and excerpts from Rhineland Radicals.

So I'd like my character's backstory to involve this particular incident, (http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1849/05/11.htm) after which he flees to the US. What I can't seem to find out is the names of any groups he might have been involved in to get him to the barricades in the first place, or any of the well-known people (besides Engels) who he might have encountered. Descriptions of the other uprisings mention People's Clubs and Democratic Clubs; the communists are just referred to as "the communists."

The character is decidedly bourgeois, but has a libertine streak that I imagine would have him end up with the most radical faction possible.
