Hi folks,
I've been here before about this subject, but have received some contrasting information on a subject and want to be sure I have things correct before I go on my merry way. Please excuse any ignorance on my part with anything under the cut.
Background: My MC's mother was born in Hesse, Germany, in 1957. She wants to be an English teacher, and since from what I was told there were 13 grades to Gymnasium until eight or so years ago, she would have probably been around 19 when she left there to obtain her other studies.
From there, I read a pdf about being a teacher in Hesse, and according to what it said, a teacher has to study two subjects 'in preparation to be a teacher' for 3-4 years in a university or art/music school if they want to teach elementary schools, and 5-6 years if they want to teach secondary school. My MC's mother would have probably wanted to teach secondary school.
I was told that while she wouldn't be going for a degree, she might still have problems finding university classes, so by the time she graduated to begin her 2-year training period, she would be about 27. However, I spoke to someone whose mother was a teacher roughly within the same time period I'm looking at, and while they lived in Bavaria, they finished their studies by 25 and were a full teacher by 27.
So, I wanted to ask:
I wasn't sure if it was a difference in what state the person would be studying, or if the ages people stop their studies could vary so much.
What would be a realistic age for her to be a full teacher in that time period, in that state?
Research: Asked questions here, Googled and Wikipedia: "being a teacher Germany," "being a teacher in Hesse, Germany."
Edited: Solved, thanks for the help!
