I'm not a doctor, nurse, or anything in the medical profession, so please bear in mind what I have to say could stand for additions and correction from someone who is. That being said, I'll answer what I can:

Heavy bleeding would probably cause problems for J long before any signs of infection set in and became an issue. If he's losing a lot of blood, he can go into shock from blood/fluid loss, which is better explained here: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000167.htm As for bullets, I'm not too versed in types and what a military person would be issued, but I do know that some guns use hollow-point rounds, which, when they hit a target, 'mushroom' out so that the exit wound is typically larger than an entry wound with those types of bullets. With a bullet entering the body, it can hit organs and bones and not go out in a straight line, so that's something else to possibly consider when it comes to what types of injuries he would have.

For the rest, you're probably going to need someone more versed in the above subjects, but I hope this helps with some of it a little. Good luck! :)
