First time poster. I'm looking for medical advice. Cut for trigger.
My character is a 14-year-old female who was sexually abused as a child by her mother's boyfriend, roughly between the ages of 6 and 8. After her mother's death when she was 9, she went to live with her father and his girlfriend. They know that she was physically abused when she was younger but do not know about the sexual abuse.
Question: If the stepmom took her in to the gynecologist for something like birth control pills (to control extremely uncomfortable periods), would there be any lingering evidence of the childhood sexual trauma? I'm trying to figure out if the doctor would flag my character as a victim of sexual abuse/what kinds of trauma would cause a red flag years later.
Also, even if the doctor suspected the abuse had occurred several years before, would she still have to contact Child Protective Services as a mandatory reporter? I'd imagine she would. The story is set in California in present day, give or take two years.
I've tried searching terms like "gynecological exam after childhood sex abuse," "lingering effects of childhood sex abuse" and read through some really gritty procedural on how to conduct rape kits, but I can't seem to find anything on whether an exam could turn up abuse after the fact.
Thanks for your help!
