[ANON POST] Curly-haired Men in the 1950s

Jan 08, 2012 22:27

In 1950s America, would a man who had moderately curly hair and didn't make any attempt to slick it down/straighten it out a bit be considered odd? Untidy? [Insert other unfavorable adjective here]? I've seen enough old photos/movies/TV shows to know that the standard look for men's hair at the time was more or less straight and held down with Brylcreem and other such greasy substances, but don't have much of a precedent for anything different. (If it helps at all, the character I'm considering as I ask is Jewish, in his late twenties, living in upstate NY and working as a librarian.)

I tried searches with various combinations of terms such as hair, hairstyles, curly, 1950s, men, but this question is sufficiently weird that nothing helpful came up.
