I have trouble imagining the whip and the kind of whipping which would cause someone to black out. Seriously.

Unless we talk real scourging (that's whipping with ninetails which have sharp metal pieces tied into the tails like barbed wire, which rip out flesh with every hit, usually by 2-3 people at the same time, for a day or so) or real bludgeoning (with something like baseball bats) it is really difficult to cause a normally muscled healthy person to black out by the whipping alone.

Fainting can be dependent on position (e.g. arms up as if crucified for long times may do that) or personal stress level, but physically it is really hard to do (and I play for 3 decades now with very serious masochists). Most people btw will not faint from pain, it's not like in the movies. Even those who dislike pain don't that often faint from it.

The injuries you will be looking at are mainly heavy bruises, some abrasions, depending on where the whip lands some internal bleeding (which needs not be deadly, though it can be a problem) - again it depends on how thick the layer of muscle and fat.

And as I a couple of times did whip to specifically create scars and lash-cuts (that was wanted marking by the receiver), let me tell you it is DIFFICULT to do that even with a whip geared to achieve those cuts.

Some solid heavy booting around would achieve what you describe here with ease instead.

Recovery would be relatively fast, a few days for basically being ambulant again, a week or two to become painfree, 4-6 weeks depending on subcutaneous membranes and connective tissues to be free of marks.

Repeat whippings would, if he were given sufficient time to heal a bit in between (1-2 days) whippings, result in him hardening to the abuse. The skin gets used to it, as will muscle and connective tissues. After a couple of months one could whip him pretty much full tilt without leaving much in marks.

On the whole his chances are good and he would be halfway back to health relatively soon. Psychologically this may be very different!

I you want to change things, you need to change implements. E.g. rope instead of leather. Rope is abrasive, it will immediately pull off the top skin layer. There are some bad-ass implements out there, like chain (from a bike or so) or cables, which immediately create bad wounds. Or you switch to real punishment types of whips, big knotted rope nine tails, as were used on British ships or in prison.

Hope that helped!
