Incarceration procedure for murder in Hawaii

May 23, 2011 14:42

Setting: Hawaii, present day

My character has been framed for the murder of the state governor, and is arrested at the scene with the victim a few metres from him and the murder weapon in his hand.

He's arrested by HPD and taken down to the station - but where will he be sent? I'm being led to believe that in the US, people go to jail pending trial, and if convicted are sent to prison. So, here are my questions:

1) Since the charges are so serious, would he be sent to a standard jail, or somewhere else?
2) Is there a chance that he'd be transferred to the Mainland instead (which I'd rather didn't happen)?
3) And wherever he does go, is he going to be put in solitary or would he have contact with other inmates?

I have absolutely no idea how the US prison system works, and particularly for such a small state and such specific circumstances, I can't find the information that I need from wikipedia or just Googling around.

Thanks in advance!
