Older homes/neighborhoods in Washington DC

Hello!

I've tried 'real estate' and 'homes in' and 'living in' Washington, DC in my searches. I've found a lot of sites that detail neighborhoods, but mostly the text is all upbeat, happy, and omg, this neighborhood is so trendy!! Or apartments - lots of apartments!

Basically what I'm looking for is a working-class neighborhood, a single-family home. The original owners would have been a blue-collar black family, and now their grand-daughter is the owner, possibly taking care of grandma or grandpa. She's more white-collar, a young professional working in the govt or maybe with the Smithsonian.

So i have no clue what neighborhood that would be, or if i need to be looking in Maryland, instead.... Halp?

I'm also wondering, if you're visiting Washington, is driving a nightmare and parking Hell? Should you just abandon the notion and ride the buses/metro?

Thank you!

ETA: The Shaw Neighborhood seems like it might be just what I'm looking for. If anyone violently opposes, please say so! :)

usa: public transportation, usa: washington dc
