Eye Injuries and Knee Injuries

Okay, so I'm writing a story set in a country resembling America in the present day, but the country is being ripped apart by civil war (the country is fictional). There is no easily available medical care for several miles where the main characters are.

There are two situations in my story where characters become badly injured. The first one is a civilian who gets his kneecaps smashed by the soldiers he's fighting. I want to have him hide in a cave after the soldiers attack him, but I don't know how well he'd be able to move, since his knees are basically destroyed and he's in agonizing pain. Is there any way to make this possible? I've Google - searched under "injuries to knee cap," which didn't help much, and "treating crushed kneecaps" which got a lot of articles about mountain hikers injuring themselves.

In the other situation, two men are in a knife - fight and one of them gets his eye and eyelid sliced. How would someone who has little to no medical knowledge, let alone about eyes, treat his eye injury? I know he'll probably be blind in that eye due to the lack of medical care, but I wanted to find out what would be realistic in the way of treating the injury. I've searched "treating cut eye" in just about every search engine I can think of, which just basically gave me "take this person to the hospital," which obv. isn't possible.

Any kind of expertise would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
