How would bandits in the woods actually LIVE?
Thank you again for, basically, making my story possible! It's inching along, and I've managed to do a lot of research myself, but here's a question I butted up against.
The mythical kingdom (based very roughly on Regency England, or that strange little country in "The Mouse That Roared "), has a rebellion brewing. I've been trying to figure out where the rebels, or at least a contingent of them, would live. The tradition is that bandits, etc. live in the woods. But how? Where do they sleep? Do they relieve themselves in the bushes? Do they only eat what they can catch? Do they have tents? Cottages? Cabins?
I've searched "Robin Hood" and all of its permutations on google, ask.com and YouTube. I've also searched 18th century encampments, 18th century outdoor living, Civil War encampments (not exactly what I'm looking for but anything will do), and 18th century bandits. You read and/or see the bandits/rebels feasting and talking around a fire, but what about the rest of the time? And do women and children live with them? What do they do about clothes?
I forced myself to watch a chunk of "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" with Kevin Costner, but even that didn't help. The fact that the movie utterly sucked didn't help. I also watched "The Count of Monte Cristo," which had a band of bandits but they were just hanging out on a beach! Where did these people GO?
Can you tell I've lived in New York City all of my life?
