I cant help on the real medical front but I can help with the riding the horse part- It would be near impossible to ride with a decent shot just about anywhere in the lower abdomen, butt, or thigh. My best guess for the most debilitating injury would be a low gut wound or hip- because you couldn't even get tied to the saddle like a hunter would tie a deer (if he has some one with him, or if the horse is going to it's home)

Goodluck!

Oh, thanks for the help on this! I've only ridden a horse once in my life, and it was so long ago that I barely remember it.

Would being shot in the hip/abdomen prevent him from riding at all from the time of injury, or would he be capable of it for a short time (the 30-45 minutes I mentioned)? Because I do need them to make a get-away before he becomes completely unable to ride.

With what you say in mind, would you think a shoulder/upper chest wound would be the better one to go with?

It would prevent him from riding at all, or even from mounting the horse. Try working out for yourself how much effort is involved in mounting a full-sized horse -- that'll give you an idea.

My first thought is to completely agree with you, but the number of people who've done it makes it seem like it's more than possible. And I don't know how much effort is involved in mounting a horse, which is part of the reason I'm asking here.

I think if it was life or death you would probably be able to in the heat of battle and adrenaline get yourself up into the saddle. I would have the shot be in the right hip, since you normally use your left leg to lift yourself on (traditionally and since weapons are generally hung from the left hip for right handed people.) so you could physically swing your right leg over with your hands if you had to.

I've ridden with some pretty nasty injuries (nothing gunshot related) but I've injured my knee and hip before and was able to make it back to camp. It wasn't comfortable, but I think it should be possible. It might be possible to tie a cloth around the injury to staunch the bleeding on the run- if your man is a good enough rider.

That's kind of what I was thinking. If his choice is get on the horse or die, he's getting on that horse, one way or another. The problem is we've never seen him ride a horse, so we don't know if he can. The actor can, most definitely, but the character is debatable.
