This really depends on what he's being charged with, which affects where he's being held. Remember that on non-serious charges, most people get out on bail. Edit: Or is it possible you mean post-conviction time in jail? (The term in the United States is only properly jail if it's really a jail, and not a prison--generally for terms of less than a year.)
FWIW, I would find this really hard to believe, unless the "and so on" is "DUI" or "involuntary manslaughter" or "assaulting the police officer who tried to ticket your ass".
Agree with the above poster. Your character would probably be out on bail, and probably wouldn't have even been arrested in the first place unless his speeding was fleeing from an officer or hitting someone or something. Even with a DUI, he'd probably just get charged and chucked in the drunk tank. You could maybe have his girlfriend pick him up the next morning?
