Tracing a Sat or Cell Phone

Time: Present day.

My MC is trapped in South America (Brazil/Venezuelan border) without a phone, passport, luggage, etc.  Her family knows she's missing but don't know the circumstances or where she is.

At one point, the MC tries to make contact with her family. I haven't decided on a method yet. Could be a cell phone she finds or a Sat phone or ( Read more... )

If they haven't called the police, just give her a mobile. Even if they have, it's a bitch and a half to get any information out of a costumer service rep. You literally have to subpoena information from the companies, even if it's information regarding your own account.

So, if mum wants to know where the last call was made from, even if the rep could see that (and they likely would be able to), they'd be required to say something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, but that's not information we have available. You can check your monthly wireless statement for information relating to calls placed and received from that number." When the statement does arrive, all it will have on it is the country of origin, and depending on the carrier, maybe the nearest rate centre, but you'll usually only get that information from Canada or Mexico.

If the police have been called, well, you still have to subpoena that information. Mobile phone accounts are easy to use for identity theft, which is why customer service reps can't give you any information unless you already gave it to them (ie- they can confirm what you said, but can't tell you anything new).

Subsequently, mum can't call her provider and ask "what was the last number that rang my phone," because that violates the privacy of another account. Usually, though, that was a call I'd get whenever someone suspected their other of playing around on them. Even if they gave me the number they suspected it was, and I could see that, yes, this number belongs to who you say it is, the only thing the caller would hear was, "I'm sorry, but I don't have any way of checking that information. You'll have to check your monthly wireless statement."

I rather enjoyed listening to people froth at the mouth when I wouldn't allow myself to lose my job for them.
