Websites and search engines?

I have used this community on many occasions, and have received very useful advice. I try my best to my own research before requesting help, but sometimes I don't know where to go. The extent of my searches usually involve wikipedia and google, but I know those aren't the only places that I could go to online ( Read more... )

Sometimes I'll search a topic at Amazon, scan the details for the books that come up, and request any that look useful from my library.

I've also used the county library search engine itself for this, but it doesn't have the summaries and reviews that Amazon does.

If you have access to a university library, JSTOR is good for humanities and social sciences. I prefer AccessMedicine and UpToDate for med-type stuff.

Depending on what exactly you are looking for, I have found that "sister" sites from channels like Biography, History, Discovery and National Geographic are helpful.

Not sure how this works in your part of the world, but my public library (like many others in the UK) has a deal with Oxford University Press that gives me access from my home computer (via this page) to the Oxford Reference collection, as well as a couple of extra books that aren't on that site such as the Dictionary of National Biography and the OED. For general research, that's where I usually start.

I use Google, MSN and Yahoo search engines. If wikipedia comes up in a search I'll use it but I don't use it as a base search spot.
