My character has been smoking anywhere for half of a pack to an enitre pack of Marlboro Menthols a day for the past ten years and has decided to quit. I've ( Read more... )

It's been a long time since I quit, but I don't remember anything other than cravings--which were pretty fierce. I would sort of trick myself by thinking, "I won't have one now, but if I still really, really want one tomorrow, I'll have it then." Then I'd go do something else and the cravings would subside. Gradually craving lessened in strength and frequency, and so became easier to ignore. I think the physical addiction part breaks off fairly quickly (a couple of weeks maybe?), but then there's the ingrained habit part which takes a lot longer. I didn't use patches or gum.

It was *hard*, I wouldn't downplay that. But nothing like (depictions I've seen) of detoxing off heroin or alcohol.

Sometimes if I have been smoking heavily, not smoking for even a few hours will leave me absolutely homicidal, especially if it's been an exceptionally stressful day.
Other times if the week has been relaxing and pleasant, and I haven't needed to smoke as much, not smoking for a few days won't leave me feeling any more irritated than usual.

I have never had a severe headache, unless I am experiencing multiple withdrawals - nicotine, caffeine, etc. I've never coughed up crap, but I'm going to guess that it'll be darker/thicker than regular, healthy-person mucus. You've got a typo in your search terms that might reduce the likelihood of getting good results. Try "withdrawal".

Oh, thanks! I didn't even notice since what I typed brought up so many results anyways.

I have phases when I am not smoking for months - because I don't feel like smoking - and don't have any withdrawal symptoms at all. Not even weight gain, which I am told is quite common.

But take away my coffee for more than 2 hours? See me go from happy normal being to castrating raving bitch in 0.5 seconds. I also have massive headaches that can last between one day and a week (I tried to stop drinking coffee once - worst month of my life!).

Strangely enough, my coffee-withdrawal symptoms are the exact same symptoms my brother goes through when he tries to quit smoking.
