Question regarding eye injuries...

Hokay. This is a very old idea, one I came up with when I was maybe
fourteen years old. I'm trying to rework the story now, and I'm
wondering--what happens when the eyes are cut?

In this story I'm writing, a man carves his name into a boy's face,
damaging his eyes and blinding him. It takes place just outside of New York City, in case that means something. The original story gets pretty trippy,
and there are a lot of metaphors about his eyes that aren't very good,
but the point is whether they'd make sense--would he still have
eyes? I've heard that the eye fluid drains out and the eyes shrivel up
and are rendered useless, but I haven't been able to find anything
conclusive. I tried googling it, WebMD, and asking my scientist father. No luck.

So yes, what I want to know is, what would happen to his eyes?
