Ireland, late 17th century church stuff
Or not quite church stuff. Anyway.
I have a character (young man--mid-twenties in age) who lives in Ireland near the end of the 17th century, and he's quite involved with a local (Catholic) church--maybe even has a job there, I don't know. BUT, he isn't a priest or a monk or any religious official of any sort, nor is he a musician. What kind of job would he be able to have, if any? Or maybe not a paying job, but just something he does out of the goodness of his heart (he is a nice person, so it wouldn't be out of character for him to volunteer to do stuff)? Or am I trying to invent something that doesn't exist? I'm kinda clueless on the way Catholic churches work >>;.
ETA: Wow fast response! I'm looking up 'lay brothers' now to see what kind of stuff they did/do, but if anyone else has any suggestions, please keep them coming!
