Subway travel in NYC

Jul 10, 2006 07:36

I'm writing a book about someone who goes to NYU, so if you live in NYC help a gal out here.

How long does it take for someone to travel on the subway from near NYU to another borough? Say Queens or Brooklyn?

Thanks!

usa: new york: new york city, usa: public transportation

From painful personal experience. These are door to door times, no walking...

Astoria to 8th St via the N/W: 45-50 minutes. It really depends on where from. I live further away in Astoria now, and if I took the R it might take closer to an hour to the 8th St stop.

Brooklyn would be much quicker--little under 30 minutes train travel from Park Slope.

Also, is this an undergrad? I think they are required to live on campus for at least freshman year there.

Living on campus isn't a requirement. Not when I went to NYU at least.

ok. I thought that it was for out of staters, at least. I wanna say that's what was in the papers/school and such after the Bobst suicids. I went to New School, so I'm not really sure.

I went there from 1999-2003 and they required freshmen to live on campus the first year unless they were already living in the area.

I suppose, if you had the ability to buy an apartment and claim that's where your family was from, you could game the system.

Also, if you have enough money, this doesn't seem to be a problem (Mary Kate and Ashley got an apartment and lived off-campus their freshman year).

So, it looks like one of those rules that you can get around, but (at least when I was there) it was a rule on the books.

That's what I thought.

Oh, that's what you meant. Yeah, unless you were already a resident of the five boroughs, it was required. I just thought you meant in general. My bad.
