slim vs. thin

моя порция английцкого на сегодня:

As mentioned before, synonyms are similar but not necessarily EXACTLY the same. Different words are used because they give a subtle nuance, a more precise idea.

Slim...is more often used for women than for men - but it is not exclusively used for women. It gives the idea of a person who does not have much fat at all on their body - a person who has low fat levels, but who has not done an excessive amount of dieting. A slim person is often considered to be "just the right size".

By using the word thin, the idea is that a person has no extra fat, but perhaps weighs less than they should. A thin person could be considered to be just a little bit less fat than a slim person - This is not really a negative term, but gives a less pleasing idea than slim.

The word skinny means VERY VERY thin and is usually used to indicate that the person is over-thin - perhaps unpleasantly so.

For example...... Jennifer Aniston is slim. Keira Knightly is now thin - if not down right skinny.
Brad Pitt is a slim man.
Bill Bob Thornton is thin in most films I've seen him in.

hope that helps
