I wrote it for my 'little' cousin Leslie who is 16 and taller than me
Advice
Turn it up, so the tunes can come
Blast the music past your ears
Let if flow through your brain
And then shoot through your veins
Like the shot of gun
Influence every part of your soul
Now you’re gone.
Every day your gonna walk
Your gonna see things you hate
And every time you talk
There will be people who hate,
Your ideas and emotions
But they wont be your fate
They will drown all your words
So don’t take the bait
Be careful where you go
And with whom you associate
Because bad friends - you know
They’re contagious
And way too soon
You’ll be under the influence
Of their bad habits
It will feed their continuance
And then it will grow
It will infest your mind
Now you’re the one breeding
Others of their kind
But don’t be blind
Your cant choose before you know
Who’s your friend and who’s your foe
Now once you have decided
Who to let inside
Let them touch your whole being
Let them change your mind
Let them change the whole world,
That you let yourself see
Let them in without drama
So you can all be.
But don’t Be anything
Don’t identify
You are too young
To have to magnify
One part of your self
That one golden eye
And obliterate the stuff
That’s hiding deep inside
The things waiting for you
To tap that mighty keg
And drain out the fluid that starts in your bed
The dreams and the shit you imagine at night
It keeps you awake and asleep all the time
You have to know where to find
What will keep you alive
What will strike you with wonder
What will terrify your mind
And still you will be asked to classify
Are you right-brained or left
Are you happy or dark
Will you grown up to do mathematics or art
It is ridiculous what they assume we know
About ourselves and the way we flow
Before we have time to satisfy
Any fades or stereotypes we want to try
So look to the sky
Before stars fade in your eye
First let them twinkle
Not hide your disguise
They will reflect back
Because they are us from the past
They are our diamond gems
They are for us to clasp
Hold on to that memory of who you once were
Because from that you will learn and it will take you
Much further than you thought
You would be able to break through
Any times you are caught
In that web of life that holds you so close
To every edge and every loose note
So that maybe one day there will be a moment of calm
Before we are done
Just as we reach dawn.
