Walter Reed, the preeminent army medical center, is near my neighborhood.
There is a great little downtown area in one of the nearby towns, Silver Spring. It is the closest "destination" to the hospital and, as such, is the place most of the young men and women who have recouped enough to start venturing into society first visit. I say "young" because they are. The woman is convinced that they are too young to be soldiers - "they look like they're in high school".
On my walk to Chipotle today I saw:
2 guys missing arms
1 guy missing a leg
1 guy with both legs amputated beneath the knee
A few weeks ago there was a girl with metal plates covering part of her head
And, when the woman and I were out celebrating my recently found internship a year ago, we ate in a restaurant - the Red Rock Canyon - next to a young family where both the father and his son needed special chairs.
It appears that they are correct when they say that "freedom" isn't free.
