Bristol Hills.
aYah...never in my life have i been um. quite so buzzed! WHILE BACKPACKING.
no no...im not into backpacking drunk. lol
and well, we werent.
but anyhow.
you know...your typical weekender trip...sittin around the fire...sipping cocoa spiked with something out of your spiffy ultralight flask.
normal.
heck...even our TRIP LEADER was surprised at how THIS trip turned out! lol
and it turned out...FAB.
different! for sure! but FAB!
so...to begin with, one needs this:
Plata Preserve. this spiffy plat is made specifically for wine preservation. and hey! it can double as another water plata...and you can use it at home! so bonus all around.
The trip itinerary went like this
- thursday night, head to NY, camp in GTs buddy's yard.
- friday, eat breakfast...shuttle cars....hike...stop at winery for tasting and a bottle for camp later on...ice cream...hike to camp.
- saturday...hike hike...camp
- sunday...hike out, grab lunch and PIE.
pretty spiffy trip, eh?
it only got spiffier! (write that down...)
Thursday.
the crew headed out to the (overgrown) yard of GTs pal in Naples, NY. (or somewhere near there). said crew consisted of
GT (our fearless leader), kbella, kara, wendy, jjdog1, ghman, nikki, mark, yours truly, tasha and trail monkey. QUITE a bunch!
no one was home at the house, which had a rather large field to camp in. it also had a nifty playhouse with bones and a shotgun hanging above the door!
no one was there, but their dog sure was...(no, the pic to the right is tasha and TM...not the trailer dog). anyhooo...it was WAY cool...cos we were able to camp in the yard...get a fire going. brews came out, and conversation started flowing....
speaking of flow...the conversation lasted into the weeeeee hours...and encompassed JUST that.
Diva Cup, anyone? (write that down...)
.i hit the sack at 2...but i hear rumors that discussions were still being had until at least 3am.
Friday
ahhhh...the morning...and the morning DEW. everywhere. all over. wet. wet. wet. but we packed up and drove to town. time for some breakfast before hitting the trail!
and breakfast? WE HAD. Bob and Ruths to be exact...i swear...you had to ROLL us out of there. what were we thinking???
we drove to the trailhead and started on our merry way! hikity hike to expend those calories! of course, some of us decided to burn a little more but hiking BACK to their vehicle 15 minutes into the hike...(seems locking doors is not always a priority when yer excited to get on the trail! haha)
very VERY pretty trail so far...i never knew about the extensive finger lakes trail system actually...i have only been in the area for skiing. so i was limited to pretty much the white blanketted mountains.
but now that i know..
and now that i know about the VERY EXTENSIVE winery supply...
i may just be heading there more often!
yay fingerlakes!
speaking of wineries...
halfway in...it was WINERY TIME!
Widmer was the winery we hit up. mmmmm...wine. cheese. happy goodness.
we all did the tasting (minus wendy, not a wine fan)...and then after a meeting of the minds, decided on what to buy.
lets put it this way...we walked outta there with 9 bottles of wine (half of which were the 1.5L variety!) and two hunks of crazy cheese!
not sure WHAT the winery folks thought when we walked in 5 minutes after buying all the wine, with empty bottles to recycle!
yup...we dumped our wine into more light weight friendly containers (any spare plat or nalgene we could find! write that down!)
ok. wine? CHECK.
some lunch? CHECK.
off to ICE CREAM!
hiked back to Bob and Ruths and grabbed a cone (or sundae)...and again...and to ROLL ourselves from the picnic tables towards the trail...(and they do this annually with the
NEOH club!)
time to HIKE A MOUNTAIN...and um. UP. said mountain.
and up.
and up.
(where are the stripping sherpas, yo?)
and up.
and into...
some "boy scouts".
the site we were going to stay at was double booked. once, to us. the other...to rochester troop 5. ranger apologized and said whoever got there first could have it, and the other ppl get the other site.
well, "troop 5" arrived first.
in their car.
with 5 teens.
and a dude.
dude even said...they werent really on a boy scout trip. in fact, seemed as if they were on a bit of a winery hopping trip themselves...seeing as they had a big ole BOX o wine there with another bottle at the fire ring...
yah. we have a few pics of that.
and you know...tasha didnt even like them! especially the wine drinking teenagers (good girl! love the growl! WRITE THAT DOWN!)
anyhow.
we sat around a bit, waiting on everyone...and commenting on how the ranger will be advised that the scouts were a front to use the site with the view...
but all didnt turn out that bad! in fact, the other site was even better! we had a HUGE water supply right there (NO trek to the river)....and our privvy had TP! w00t!
we set up camp...got the wine bar all ready to go...cut the cheese (haha) and had ourselves a fab night around the fire! (until wendy said we all had to go to bed! and...well...we were all a little tired. and buzzed. and full. and buzzed.)
oh! and guess who drove out of their camp at 9:30pm?? yah. um. if you said "boy scout troop 5 from rochester NY"....you win!
(spam is made of bad people!)
Saturday:
breakfast.
trail.
hiking.
RAIN.
TOTALLY awesome lunch stop...and thank goodness, the rain held off until after we enjoyed it.
and most of the way down the crazy mountain road thingie...
then.
BAM. hit. rain. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
LUCKILY...some farmer dude has a nice big ole barn on the trail.
so. we utilized it.
but. i mean. ok. we had a great morning hike. (and uh...discovered that jjdog has a VERY. LARGE. FEAR. OF. SNAKES. and we also found the Naples NY MethLab along the way! BONUS!)
and a fabulous view during lunch.
what do we do in a barn while it downpours for an hour?
insert: WINE.
(write that down...)
break out those plats and genes!
and SOME KINDA ENVY CONVO...what the hell were we discussing anyhow???
rain go bye bye.
hikers go buzz buzz.
trail go UP THE MOUNTAIN for two miles.
yah, um. i havent hiked up a mountain for two miles buzzed on wine...until well. last saturday.
interesting, i might add!
you dont really notice. the. um. incline. or. length. or. well. your toes.
the entire duration of the hike, i was up in the front with jjdog1 and kbella (just our hiking pace i guess)....and when he turned the corner and we landed at the Outback Inn Shelter to wait for the others, i can say that the non-toe-noticing buzz had worn off.
oooo! a nice SEAT.
and plenty, there was.
the outback inn shelter was the HOME of some dude named "SP"...but it seems he doesnt live there anymore. actually, its a trail shelter
than has more mice than humans, and has a nice collection of camp chairs. hehe
and uh. no strange SP dude (inside joke from the previous year)....
oh. and dont sneeze in the shelter.
it might fall over.
yah. no. we werent staying there. just breaking there for the others to get up the hill..
then ONWARD!
to a GREAT TENT SITE at the top of Hi Tor. in fact, the site came complete with a trail frame and cans of beans! BONUS! got water. set up camp. started fire.
and of course...cracked open the wine.
(i mean, come on now! of course!)
wine.
food.
marshmallows.
conversation.
NO STORMS
(9 backpackers on top of a mountain, and NO ONE knows where North is!)
NICE final night on the trail !
(ps...no one touched the beans. write that down.)
Sunday
RISE AND SHINE!
time to hike on out...
and we did just that.
well. ok. we swam a little bit. (wow! where did that swamp come from???)
4.5 miles out...to the cars...did the shuttle...and headed to town for a FABULOUS lunch at a
spooky cool old hotel (which was pretty fancy! i wonder why they stuck us in the back corner? i mean...sure, we werent in our sunday best...but did we smell that bad?) and then to
MONICA'S PIES!
oh heavenly grape yumminess!!!.
what a perfect and FITTING way to end this trip! by shoving a bunch of smelly wino's with backpacks into a fancy dining room, then gourging on pie after :) BOOOOOOOOOOYAH!
