quoting a 12 yo male

We were going on and on this am about drawing up a family contract. After dh and I ranting for an hr with our apathetic 12yo. He states "it's not the destination, but the journey." I had no response, in fact I wasted my energy.

I finally thought of a retort. Yes, but mom and dad want to know where to find you on the map of your journey? I guess he told us.

He took our points and ideas and it seems he will cont. to carry his weights, but he is so against changing his paradigm. I want to see dialogue. I want to see give and take.

Our work in progress seems so disorganized and eclectic. We need some tie to bind us. Perhaps an academic gps. I don't have time or energy to re-invent an academic gps, but the 12yo has loads of it.

It's time to define terms, express what I'd like to see, then turn the box over and shake out the details. Let them fall as they may and give it to him to sort.

Life happens, just too fast in this moment. The 40 and 41 yo's are weak and tired, the 12yo and 10 yo are strong and spunky. We should focus on their strengths and just guide with our wisdom. Our wisdom is the map, their energy is the battery power or gas to get to our destination.

As we shift into another stage we need that gps. Mo
