Dick, and all, I'm one of those 'work for no pay'. I'm unlearning something about myself. I'm a tinkerer. A renaissance want to be.
One day I'm building cities at Cleopatra, another day sorting through older books, another day goofing off with my boys, another day attempting new recipes, and of course artsy and craftsy too.
What makes this unschool lifestyle of mine so much more meaningful is freedom. As a teacher I felt restrained and constrained to time and topic. This bit of teaching to a test was like teaching with handcuffs on.
As we have been at this for 5 years I don't see how I could go back to 'teaching within limits' or what this prof from ucsc referred to as coersed teaching. (sorry about spelling or is it coerced.)
interesting idea, coerced teaching., teaching for the paycheck.
I'm also very found of the old Kung Fu series, I wanted my life to be more bohemian to float from job to job with intention of learning. It's an ideal, not a goal of mine, I just like that bohemian idea.
I'd include a bit on my husband he is the provider. At one point he was restricted by the choice of mb, molecular biology, since it was the field that utsa had scholarships and grants for. he too wonders if this makes him happy.
with much experience his ideas have shifted. he is anxious and happy to go to work. working in a lab is also very socially different, he goes to work very casual in dress. his schedule is for him to pan out. as long as he puts in the 8 hours. of course the work takes longer sometimes, but he is all willing to put in extra.
