I went and saw "Sucker Punch" last night with the family.

You know, I initially had quite high hopes for the movie. Zack Snyder (at least in my mind) certainly can deliver the goods in terms of style and entertainment value. Both "300" and "Watchmen" -- the first two films that come to mind when I think of Snyder's work -- were certainly enjoyable ( Read more... )

Hey there girl! Long time no see!

For me, the use of rape and rape imagery was pretty heavy handed, but I am by nature over-analytical and see all sorts of stuff everywhere. It may not be as blatant as I'm making it out to be, but I still feel like it's:
a) Incredibly prominent
b) Incredibly uncomfortable
c) Incredibly unnecessary
The fear that it was trying to invoke could easily have been achieved by spending more time in that upper level, establishing how ominous and destructive the asylum environment is and simply eliminating that second level. Moving from the cold, dank of the institution would have been just as (if not more) effective in terms of tonal shift. The club was an excuse for skanky costumes.

I can kind of see why she would make the jump to prostitute. I don't agree with it or like it, but I can see it. She's being taken advantage of, controlled by the system. It's an easy slide from that to sex work as we envision it -- whores forced against their will to do things, pimps who run the 'show', etc. This works either with Baby Doll or Sweet Pea.

It could actually be Sweet Pea's brain. She's the one who does the opening and closing narrations, and Baby Doll says outright that it's Sweet Pea's story, not hers. I felt like that was kind of cheap, frankly, but that's just me.
