Was a whole different game being played back when I was a kid.

Effing nostalgia.

I spent last night thinking about all those TV shows I'd enjoyed in my late adolescence/early teens. I have had much better ideas, the majority of which have not resulted in this kind of headache.

"Delta State" was the major one I thought about. It followed the story of four twenty-something amnesiacs with various psychic powers. If ( Read more... )

1. Oh Our Lady Peace... WTF happened to you after that first album? The second one was all right, but... Oy.

Ah well.

2. Oh Nostalgia... It's why I'm going to spend a good two to three hours of my trip home in my bedroom beating The Goonies II on my NES. Woot!

Much Music Big Shiny Tunes albums. I can still remember the first time I heard Blur's "Song 2" on that channel; it was kind of like finding true love. Good times, good times.

Oh, BST CDs. I'm pretty sure I have some of those lying around somewhere.

A hallelujah amen to Blur, by the way. How could you not love and rock out to that "WOOO-HOOOOO!" part of the chorus?

Are you counting "Naveed" as the first album? While that was great ('Starseed' and 'Naveed' were beautiful songs), I maintain "Clumsy" will never not be an awesome album. I could listen to that one front to back and not be disappointed. Either it's aged well, or I haven't. I think the point where they veered way to the left was somewhere around or after "Spiritual Machiness".

Now, keep in mind I think it's been like, six years since I've listened to either album... Maybe even longer.

I think (or thought) Naveed was better, at least top to bottom. When I was in high school. Whatever that's worth. Which isn't to say clumsy is bad. Solid album. I certainly didn't mean to bash it. BUT Things definitely trailed off after it.

I think I'm biased against Clumsy because it's the album that REALLY got them over in America and I used to (and still do to some extent) turn on things that I like when they get popular.

I'd like to think I've grown out of that. Like to.

And now, for some reason, I want to watch an old episode of 'Rita and Friends.' Odd.

Full disclosure now being the order, I suppose, I'm biased more towards 'Clumsy' because it was one of the very, very small collection of albums I was raised on. That, and I can remember listening to "Superman's Dead" over and over again, feeling that.

You didn't come across as bashing it, don't worry. And I agree with you completely -- "Spiritual Machines" was an interesting musical exercise, but it marked their complete and total shift. So I just keep my copy of "Clumsy" and hold my peace. Though I would have liked to have seen them on their most recent tour. They worked it like they were touring "Clumsy" again for one leg (the one I would have liked to have caught), and "Spiritual Machines" for the other, which is a total nostalgia-based cash grab, I know, but I would have enjoyed it.

Trust me. I like to think I'm fairly open to music and the like, but to my shame I've screamed sell-out too, and attempted to whip out indie cred and suchlike. We all have our moments, I suppose. I can hardly cast the first stone.

There are worse things to be than music snob-ish, though I'd like to think I'm past it. Again, I'd LIKE to.

Honestly, I tend to just not talk about it. But that might just be me not liking people. Specifically those whose response to my saying that I don't like "Artist X" is "Hey, where is YOUR album."

So it's a topic I tend to glaze over. Though it does hurt my soul a little when I'm at work and the Smirnoff commercial that uses Ceremony is on and I say to the rest of the crew "Anyone recognize this? It's one of the most important songs ever written" and receive not but blank stares.

If they ask what it is, I shrug and jokingly say they should get some culture. JOKINGLY.

But, yeah. It could be worse. I'm also an angry bitter video game snob.

Specifically those whose response to my saying that I don't like "Artist X" is "Hey, where is YOUR album."People like that are the reason being a music fan is so difficult sometimes. Under the mask of calling for simple enjoyment of music, they're throwing underhanded punches towards people who don't agree with them. Sure, let's enjoy music, but don't you dare tell us we can't have a dissenting opinion because we don't have a record contract. Plenty of people who have record contracts shouldn't, and plenty who should don't ( ... )

And yes, I did just pull out my copy of the 2004 live album.

Which reminds me that I need to add Naveed and Clumsy to the list of stuff I need to pick up next time I go for a used record store run.
