Today is 'scare the noobs' day for the Education program on campus.
Okay, okay. Technically, it's a pre-orientation. Their honest-to-goodness orientation comes in August. What happens today is that our current class, who has all but finished save for some paperwork, and next year's class all get together and talk shop for a couple hours. The current class gets to act as mini-mentors, answering questions, clearing up myths, and assuaging fears as best we can.
It's odd, because I really don't feel qualified at all to do this, but I am. I did it. I finished my practicum; as soon as all my paperwork goes through I get my license. I, and my entire Professional Year cohort, are probably the best qualified people TO do this. What the profs tell them is one thing, sure, but we've just finished living it. Still, psychological knowledge =/= actual belief (to quote the film 'Constantine' -- my favourite I-shouldn't-love-it-but-do movie -- on belief: "No, no, you know. There's a difference."), and thusly, I sit here feeling like that eighteen year old who stumbled into her dorm first year without a real clue of what to expect from the coming years.
Nostalgia: wise self-reflection, or an unhealthy act of self-depreciation?
Ah, well. It's ten in the morning. I've got time to make me some eggs, drown another cup of coffee, and either watch a movie or get a little more paperwork done before I have to go catch the bus.
And now, a random smattering of points, questions, and trivia just because.
1) Lit nerds? You need to get your hands on a copy of
"Ophelia Joined The Group 'Maidens Who Don't Float': Classic Lit Signs On To Facebook" by Sarah Schmelling. The title says it all.
(Come ON! You get the Bronte sisters bickering about Byronic heroes, Romeo and Juliet exchanging wall posts and sounding like EVERY FRIGGING FIFTEEN YEAR OLD ONLINE EVER, and more. I cannot read this book in public, for it cracks my shit up so very, very hard.)
2) Finally bought my own copy of 'Fight Club' last night. I know this because Tyler knows this. I'd mooched
girlfrom10thave 's copy previously, and now I won't have to. I find myself unsure of the exact reason why this makes me as gleeful as it does.
3) The Evelyn Evelyn CD (concept album featuring Amanda F*%^ing Palmer and Jason Webley as conjoined twins. TRY AND BEAT THAT. JUST YOU TRY) is amazing in all the right ways. Macabre, funny, and AHAHAHAHAHAHA SUCKERS I GET TO SEE THEM WHEN THEY'RE HERE IN MAY.
4) Does anyone on my flist read
'Shortpacked' at all? I'm kinda hoping for someone to flail with over Mike and Amber in all their twisted glory it, and figured I might as well ask.
