I saw The Golden Compass on Tuesday It was fun, not particularly good, but fun. I am a giant fan of the books, so I'm probably more "nit-picky" the other people.
I'll start with what I enjoyed; the acting was good, I liked the music and I had fun. Dakota Blue Richards was a compelling lead, and played a good, if "toned-down", Lyra, and Nicole Kidman was a perfect fit. Eva Green, Daniel Craig, and Sam Elliot were given too little screen-time for me to properly judge their performances properly, and Christopher Lee is just THERE for one scene, doing his Christopher Lee thing. Freddie Highmore,Ian McShane, and Ian McKellen did good voice work, My friend, Alex, and I especially liked McKellen, because we could randomly yell out Gandalf quotes, we're cool like that.
Now on to what I was less fond of, the plot points and themes. They took the religious themes, for the most part, out of the movie! WTF! What are they going to do for the third book/movie, where GOD IS MORE OR LESS FREAKING KILLED!!! Also Ragnar Sturlusson? Iorek Byrnison and Iofur Raknison are NOT that similar, the children wouldn't be confused. On that note, why did they change the Svalbard and Bolvangar sequences around? was there any point? The ending also lost all it's bite! They made it so cheesy and happy, instead of the pure awesomeness that was the ending of the book. I understand that they wanted to make the movie more kid-friendly, but they were already killing people left and right, even if they were the "bad guys"( but that sort of justification would miss the point of the book wouldn't it?).
All in all I enjoyed "The Golden Compass", until I stopped to think about it.
