One Mistake

It had all been a mistake. Really. It wasn't like he invited these sorts of things to happen. X hissed in pain as another broken piece of armor was pulled off his body. There were days where he was glad that he'd been built to emulate a human so closely. Today was not one of them. Why couldn't Dr. Light have installed a switch to turn the pain off?

"Because that would have made you less human," came the prompt reply. X blinked up at the medic, startled. He hadn't realized that he had spoken out loud. The medic gave him a level look, then smiled faintly. "And because you need those pain signals to tell you what's wrong. And me, for that matter. The pain's linked with the diagnostic system and I can't get proper readings from it if part of it's been turned off."

"Oh." X immediately felt guilty for the uncharitable thought. Perhaps it was time for a change of subject. "That other reploid who was caught in the blast. Is he all right?"

"Zero? He's-"

"I'm not the one you should be worrying about," another voice cut in with a growl. X barely had time to register the red reploid's entrance before Zero had stormed across the room and jammed a finger into his chest. "What the hell were you thinking!"

The sheer anger in the Hunter Commander's voice took X completely aback. "What-?"

Zero didn't give him a chance to finish. "I've seen some stupid stunts in my time with the Hunters, but that really takes the cake! Did your creator forget to program your brain entirely, or did you actually think it was a good idea to hand a bomb to a bunch of Mavericks!"

"I didn't realize they were Mavericks!" X protested. "They said they were Hunters!"

"And that's where the 'not thinking' part comes in!" Zero shot back. "Did you even ask for identification?"

"I had an armed bomb in my hands," X said irritably. "What was I supposed to do, stand around asking questions until the thing went off?"

"What you were supposed to do was call the Maverick Hunters the minute you realized there was an armed bomb in the area. Leave this to the people who know what they're doing."

X scowled and opened his mouth to say something, but stopped when the medic rested a hand on his shoulder. The medic wasn't looking at him, though. No, the annoyed expression on his face was reserved for Zero. "Commander Zero, I'll thank you not to badger my patient while he's under my care. Save your reprimands until after he's been repaired."

Zero looked like he wanted to argue, but after a moment he backed down with a short nod. He turned as though to leave the room, then stopped and turned back. The glower on his face has not disappeared. "Next time you want to be a hero, X, join the Maverick Hunters. Otherwise you're just going to get in the way."

Then he was gone.

But his words remained.

X would never forget that day.
