I'm back in Canada. And I'm happy. It's not that I don't like Russia (anyone who knows me knows I love it), but sometimes you just know it's time to go. My last day in St. Petersburg was solemn. I had finally made it out to Piskarovsky Cemetary, and I sat. This cemetary is filled with the victims of the blockade of Leningrad during WWII, 500,000 of them. Theye are buried in mass graves marked only by the year. It was a beautiful place, well kept and peaceful. They play music throughout the grounds so it really puts you in a contemplative frame of mind. I liken it to being on the grounds of Auschwitz, Dachau or Birkenau, it's eerie. The thing is though is that most f the world (our generation at least) has no idea about the Siege of Leningrad; just the amount of suffering and the horror of it, and also the courage of the Russian people. I was glad I finally made it there.
It's good to be back. I'm ready to get back to real life: work, school, responsibility. And I need a haircut, go to Chapter's, watch 24, drink real milk. It's the little things I miss.
