Jan Švankmajer Film Bonanza!

Sep 06, 2009 14:53

Spent last night watching (and in some cases, rewatching) a lot of Jan Švankmajer films. For those that don't know, Jan Švankmajer is a Czech surrealist stop-motion animation film-maker who started his work back in the sixties. There are a lot of rumours that the Czech government was secretly testing drugs (specifically LSD) on some of its citizens back then and it's been speculated that Jan was one of them. He's an interesting figure in and of himself, but the stuff he does is completely beautiful and quite full of potent symbolism.

I thought I'd share some, so here we are. I've selected films/clips that won't distress the people who have me on their flist--both parts of Food are very good, but two people I know have eye squicks and another has a difficult time with food-related media, so I'm mostly focusing on Něco z Alenky--known in English as Alice.
