I just discovered this community, and I find the stories behind everyone's tattoos really fascinating! (For the most part, anyway!)
I have 8 tattoos, but only one with any literary background. Edgar Allan Poe's Raven.
I have been dealing with severe chronic depression, and various mental health issues since childhood, and I recently found a quote that I knew I wanted tattooed somewhere on me, as it eloquently reflects how sinister mental health problems can be, even though it's an invisible disease.
It's from the poem Haunted by Emily Dickinson, and the part I want tattooed is in bold. I haven't decided on placement or a font yet, but when I do get this, I'll be sure and post a pic!
One need not be a chamber to be haunted, One need not be a house; The brain has corridors surpassing Material place. Far safer, of a midnight meeting External ghost, Than an interior confronting That whiter host. Far safer, through an Abbey gallop, The stones achase, Than, moonless, one's own self encounter In lonesome place. Ourself, behind ourself concealed, Should startle most; Assassin, hid in our apartment, Be horror's least. The prudent carries a revolver, He bolts the door, O'erlooking a superior spectre More near.
