"People just have no clue about their genuine nature. I have countless friends who describe themselves as "cynical," and they're all wrong. True cynics would never classify themselves as such, because it would mean that they know their view of the world is unjustly negative; despite their best efforts at being grumpy, a self-described cynic is ( Read more... )

I am not the OP but Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs is a collection of essays by Chuck Klosterman. It's a reasonably enjoyable book, but personally I find Klosterman to be a bit of a pretentious dick sometimes.

I really dislike Klosterman. Everything I've read of his seems so unjustifiably smug. I just imagine him sitting at a computer, typing away and thinking "Ha, ha, ha, I am SO clever!"

Eghg. To each their own. I've tried to get through two of his books and I put them down halfway through (a rarity--I will try to force myself through a great deal of bad reading just so I can say I managed it).

Then again, I hate Jane Austen too, so what do I know?

I do like Austen, I think but I got to agree with you on that description of him!

I read "killing yourself to live" and he just came across like the prototype of an asshole music journalist. Those who think women can't enjoy music in the same way/write about it in a same way.
Way to go when you misquote Radiohead several times and spell their guitarist's name wrong in a published and edited book..

oh, that does sound pretty awful. this is the first time i'm reading anything by Klosterman though. i've just finished the third chapter of Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs and so far, i'm enjoying it. i agree though. he does come across as smug and self-opinionated but he puts across most of his points quite elegantly.

This guy does sound like he thinks he's a lot better than he actually is. ;)
