She wasn’t expecting anyone, so the knock at the door was startling so the dark liquid in the glass sloshed against the rim. It was her night off and Gil was at work, so she ignored the knock and took another sip letting the alcohol burn a warm path down her throat. But the knocking didn’t end; just grew more insistent. Sighing she set the glass down hoping that a few brisk words would get rid of the person. Swinging open the door, the irritated words were choked back as she stuttered. “M-mom?”
“Sara.”
“What are you doing here?”
Dark eyes so similar to Sara’s glanced at the casted arm and then locked on Sara’s before raising a single arched eyebrow.
“Mom its nothing.” Again her mother’s eyebrow arched in disbelief. “I’m fine.”
“So fine you’re drinking again?” The words were soft with understanding, but carried a slight sting, a not so subtle reminder of their history. Sara stared at the tile as tears stung her eyes. “Oh sweetheart.” The familiar endearment was whispered just a moment before hugging Sara.
When the tears fell Sara didn’t bother wiping them away or hiding them; for the first time since her rescue Sara let them flow freely.
Not much, but its a start, and I'd appreciate you letting me know what you think
