To say that Ava was a little surprised to get a package at her room was to put it mildly, confusion running across her features as she took the small box and the note. She sat down on the edge of her bed, her head tilted to the side as she opened the box and saw that it was a Tiffany's Box. She arched a brow as she opened the box and then she found the necklace, her features softening.
It was the note that put her into tears and she grabbed her phone, dialing his number. As soon as he answered, she gave a little sniff, "I love it, it's gorgeous. I love you."
James was relaxing on his couch with Dodger's head on one leg, Ollie's on the other when he felt his iPhone go off. Ollie raised his head and gave a small glare at his owner, to which James ducked his head apologetically and fished the electronic out of his pocket.
"Sorry, sorry," he muttered to his dog, who replaced his head on his lap as soon as the iPhone was out of James' pocket. He smiled at seeing whose name and picture was on the screen, and hit the "Answer" button. He brought it to his ear, he was greeted with her voice and her telling him that she loved him.
"I take it you got the package then?" he asked innocently.
She let herself laugh as she nodded her head even though he couldn't see it, her finger running lightly against the necklace as she smirked to herself but remembered to keep her voice even.
"I did. It's so beautiful, a little smaller than my usual ring size but it shouldn't be hard to fix." She was surprised that she didn't laugh, humor didn't even show. "The diamond is perfect. It's even prettier than my promise ring was."
James was about to laugh but then blinked. And went silent. And sat up a little straighter. His two companions whined as their pillow moved and shifted around. He cleared his throat as he stood from the couch and walked over to the rear door so he could look out onto the view of the city.
".. I. Uh." He didn't even know how to respond to that. Had she gotten the wrong package? He had picked the necklace out himself, and had seen the man wrap it up. He had brought it to the post office to mail .. So, why was she talking about a ring? And a diamond one, at that.? "Your, uh, your usual ring size, did you say?"
Ava couldn't keep doing it, she started to snicker the moment that he started stumbling over his words and what to say. At the end, she was just full on giggling as she could see the look on his face. He would be freaking out, trying to figure out how in the hell she would have gotten a ring if he had bought her a necklace.
"Babe, I'm teasing you." She giggled again, "I got the necklace, smart ass. It's beautiful, thank you."
James stopped as he hung his head with a laugh. He should've known better. He knew it wouldn't have taken long for them to slip back into their old habits of poking fun at each other; she had just beaten him to the punch.
"Ah, you're -- You're so evil," he muttered in between laughing. "I'm glad you like it, baby. But like I said, it's only the first."
He really should have but that suited her fine, she was going to have fun torturing him while he wasn't as used to it as he was two years ago. She chuckled again as she heard him laugh, a smile crossing her features.
"You set yourself up for it." She pulled the necklace from the box, studying it before arching a brow, "You don't have to get me anything else, baby."
"Yeah, yeah, I know I did." James meandered back over to the couch and sat back down between his two dogs, who were happy to resume their positions on their favorite human cushion. He smiled softly at hearing the fondness in her voice, and shook his head. Then remembered she couldn't see him. "I know I don't have, but I'm going to. I told you in the note, I've got two years to make up for -- I'm not letting that go."
She chuckled, shifting her weight as she laid back on the bed and pushed some hair from her eyes while glancing at the ceiling. "I know you won't but this is perfect enough for me." She watched the light play over the diamonds, her features still soft before she lowered it to rest on her collarbone. "I miss you." She murmured softly then.
"I know it is. I'm still not stopping," James replied, nodding his head a little bit. His free hand went down to scratch behind Dodger's ear, his head tilting in the direction of the ear that was being favored. The softness in her voice made his heart jump and then ache for her at the same time. "I miss you, too, baby. I miss you, too."
"If you spoil me too much, we'll both be in trouble." She pointed out, teasing him with a little laugh before she admitted that she missed him. Her own heart ached a little as he said it back, closing her eyes as she let out a happy little noise, "I miss hearing that." Which was true, she had missed a lot of things and it was nice to get them back. To feel that way again.
James let out a quiet sigh as he leaned back more on the couch, sinking a little. His hand rested on Dodger's head as he went quiet for a little while. He really did miss her, more than he realized. And while it scared him that he was feeling this way with someone again, the happiness over the fact that he was still able to miss someone outweighed the fear.
"How was your day?" he asked, wanting to hear her voice again.
It scared her at times too, simply because it had been someone else just a short while ago but this felt right. She tilted her head a little, a warm glow in the middle of her chest as she rolled onto her stomach and laid the necklace out on the blanket so that she could study it a little.
"It wasn't too bad, I did some looking around and stopped by a couple of galleries just to check them out." She brushed some hair behind her ears, "Just did some thinking, it's been kind of nice."
"Did you find anything good? Or anything worth noting?" James asked, curious. He knew that her finding something she liked, occupation-wise, would be important for her if she was seriously considering moving out to California. "Thinking?" he asked, then stopped himself. He felt like he was asking too many questions, so instead, he added on, "I've been doing some thinking, too. I ran at Malibu with the dogs. Dodger's getting so big." He glanced down at the growing puppy who perked his ears at the sound of his name, smiling.
"There's one near here that I don't mind but of course I have to figure out a place to live first." She nodded a little, brushing some hair back from her face as she shifted her weight a little bit and then she nodded, "Just random things." She was about to say more but then he just continued on which made her smile. "You could have called me, I would have gone for a run." She nodded, deciding she missed Mercedes.
"Right, right .. Have you gotten in touch with Devon about all that? I talked to him briefly today, but didn't really get around to saying much about it, except thank you." James cradled his iPhone between his shoulder and his ear as his now free hand went down to Ollie's head to stop the whining. "Oh -- Well, next time. I usually go every morning, whenever I've got the time and energy." He thought about his schedule for a moment. "Tomorrow, I'm recording from noon to midnight, so if you want to come with me in the morning, you can. I can call you when I'm up?"
It was the note that put her into tears and she grabbed her phone, dialing his number. As soon as he answered, she gave a little sniff, "I love it, it's gorgeous. I love you."
