James had been sitting on the beach, his toes dug neatly into the sand, the tips peeking through the grains. His guitar was resting on his lap, his eyes closed and his fingers strumming carefully, but seemingly improvised. He was working on a song that hadn't yet been written: the lyrics were still rough, replaced by little hums of the melody he'd decided upon; the notes coming from the guitar changed every so often, realizing this sounded better than that; and the notebook resting next to James was full of scribbles where words had been exchanged for others.
As he was singing, he heard another voice join in. His eyes opened and glanced around, looking for the source. He saw Echo walking towards him, repeating what she heard. With a faint smile, he kept singing, kept playing, wanting to hear how it sounded from a different perspective.
She sat beside him, and James noticed that same, sad look she'd been wearing when they first met. He finally finished the song and tilted his head as he watched her.
"Are you still sad?" he asked, his eyes soft.
"Still sad .."
"Did someone leave you again?"
"Leave again .." Despite the fact that she was repeating what she heard, he knew that what she said was somehow more poignant than what he was asking -- her repetitions weren't on accident.
"Do you want to keep singing?"
"Keep singing!" she suddenly exclaimed, her eyes sparkling. They didn't look like they were about to fill with tears, and if James had to play until his fingers ached to keep it that way, he didn't mind. With a soft, warm smile, he put an arm around her and gave her a gentle squeeze.
"Then we'll keep singing," he said, strumming his guitar.
