themed rec set

My new haircut is totally excellent! And looks almost exactly like my old one, but instead of messy John Franklin bangs, I now have messy Anne Elliot bangs. That was a terrible metaphor, and it does not diminish the pretty at all, I'd like to point out.

I told suckmyglock that I would do some Die Hard recs.

Okay, so you have already read Connectivity (Five Meals John Didn't Plan To Have) by poisontaster. Most of these are not all that similar to the above, because fandom is unique and a special flower with different properties, contingent on interest and reception and not that good at keeping to a theme. I thought I had an absolute ton of bookmarks on del.icio.us. I do not, I have four. I just want to do a quick rundown of them, however.

This is an illuminating little fic. I happen to be very fond of Matt, and all of Matt's problems (luckily, so are the producers of the movie) and they are wonderful here. However, this is more a story about John McClane, action movie hero, in a moment of repose. Being what it is, things are not that simple. Actually fairly haunting, and the device that Matt is actually quite relateable, and shares his insight with the reader, while John is this confusing monolith, is very effectively rendered. One of the advantages of action movie fandoms is that the characters are often, hmm, unevenly established; one or two traits are hyper-developed, out a morass of personality. This really works for a ninety-minute movie, and it is interestingly shaped here, and adds a nice sense of discover to this story.

This is hot, power-dynamic, possibly-kinda-emo button-pushing porn. I like porn.

Learning Curve by gemjam
Again, porn. It's really pretty much porn from beginning to end, and that's it. Actual first-time scenes are not really always my thing, but for Matt Farrell, you pretty much have to admit that he is probably under-sexed, if at all. So it's a very logical thing to write him as a virgin. Yeah. (You might want to turn your browser to "no page style," before you look at this link. Just a helpful suggestion.)

A Year in the Life by miss-pryss
I am so sorry, but porn is about all I read. Uhm. This has two nice, non-porn things about it, as well. Matt actually deals with all the drama of canon in a reasonable and responsible way, or at least, as much as he can while actually falling apart. It also has a brilliant negotiation of relationship boundaries, and wow, John McClane is essentially unashamed about those things, and it's cringe-inducing, but ends quite well, With porn, if you were wondering.

any tool is a weapon if you hold it right by healingmirth
So, this starts out emo and sad, and ow, what aspects of humanity John McClane has actually been exposed to clearly mostly suck. It moves on to joy pretty quickly and I mean porn. I am a hugely intellectual reader, yes.

The Height of Technology is Frozen Pizza by hackthis
This is just really funny. I love all the banter, even if it is possibly totally insane. Anyway, they manage to get together despite enormous flaws and general all-around dickery.

Die Hard 4.5 : I'll Be Hard for Christmas by bookshop
This is really pretty neat. How many fics make you want to see more Congressional testimony? Not many aside from this one, I will tell you that. One of the things I have a real difficulty with in the canon is the relationship between the actual bureaucracy and John McClane, professional crazyperson with a deathwish. Most action movies attempt to deal with this by setting up a real antagonism between the bureaucracy with power, and the lone hero, who possibly picks up some alternative sidekicks, and it's a hapless tussle at the end, when the lone hero is heralded. This story brings that into focus, and turns it a little; what if that hapless bureaucracy really dealt with the events, and what if they were not just Bolshy fun-killers, but just as scared and uncertain as anyone in such circumstances would be? Of course, the fact that John and Matt manage to beat the bad guys, give semi-coherent testimony as to why, and hook up almost qualifies them for more accolades.

Ooh, and also there's a whole list of these things; Master list of Die Hard fanfiction if you're ever bereft of links or something.

Ack, I just swallowed the back of my pen. I need to stop buying biros, I am going to die from them one of these days.
