Chapter Seventeen
Jensen could never remember how he got to the hospital on the day of his accident. One of his friends from Dallas told him that his face had been covered in blood, his lip had been split and he was pretty much unconscious the whole time.
Although he had always been unable to remember he had ever since felt uncomfortable around hospitals and doctors. Waking up without knowing who you are it’s a terrifying experience and Jensen had wished he never had to be in a hospital again.
Unfortunately his wish did not come true.
As soon as he entered the hospital the anxiety had been hard to dismiss and it only got worse when he arrived at his mother’s hospital room.
Jensen leaned against the wall trying to breathe. He had got a glimpse of his mother lying on the hospital bed and pain hit his head like remove thunder. He knew that a big flashback was coming. It’s never been this painful and for the first time he was actually afraid. He tried to scream for help but his throat closed up. He’s afraid he's going to faint but when his legs were too weak to support him he felt a pair of arms holding him close.
“Jensen.”
It’s Jared. Jensen was confused about why was he here but he still could voice his questions. He’s fighting for air and the pain was excruciating. He could hear Jared calling for help and he wished he could tell him that as painful as it is he knew that he needed to see what was coming. He had the feeling that a memory this painful must be important.
Suddenly reality is lost and he’s seeing it. But he's seen this before. He had seen this memory in his dreams.
He’s being attacked.
He wants to scream for help, but he’s coughing and suffocating due to the blood in his mouth. He still can’t see the face of his attackers. Lying on the floor of the cemented street, Jensen hugs his legs against his chest.
He has seen this many times in his dreams, but this time one of the guys talks.
“It’s a message from Mr. Padalecki. Stay away faggot.”
He opened his eyes and immediately the pain started to recede. Jared was at his side looking relieved and even his mother was smiling at him.
All that Jensen could think about was that he finally knows for sure why he had left Snyder.
He had run away from Jared’s father.
Jensen remained silent through all the drive home. It’s clear that Jared was still disturbed by what he had seen. Jensen’s mother was in pretty bad shape. Not physically, but mentally. Her speech was confused and she looked terrified. The doctors reassured him that she was still suffering from traumatic shock and given the time everything would be all right. But Jensen and Jared hadn’t left the hospital until midnight, making sure that the risk was inexistent.
They both knew that these last incidents were too close and too similar not to be taken seriously. These were warnings of someone who really wanted Jensen and possibly also his mother out of town. They hadn’t shared a word but Jensen was sure that by now there was only one big suspect in the origin of these attacks. But Jared was perhaps too afraid to say it out loud.
The heavy silence remained between them until they’re finally back at the house.
“There’s something else you’re not telling me, isn’t?” Jared asked as they stepped outside of the car.
“I remember something.” Jensen didn't know how to tell Jared. “About my nightmares.”
“Something? From when you were leaving in Dallas?”
“What? No. I... it was here... I was attacked just like in those nightmares. They’re pieces of a memory.” Jensen was fighting against the lack of better words.
“What? When?” Jared.
“It was before I decided to left to Dallas. They attacked me and threatened me...” Jensen didn't want them but there are tears rolling down his face.
“He did it... didn’t he?” Jared words were like knives in his heart. “God. He hated you that much...”
“I’m sorry, Jay.” Jensen leaned forward and hugged Jared.
“I’m the one who’s sorry. How could I not see? My father is crazy... He was always stubborn and slightly manipulative, but this? This is crazy.”
“I think he believes in the curse.” Jensen confessed.
“Of course I do.” They both started, looking in the direction of the voice.
Next to the door of their house was Jared’s father. The first thing Jensen noticed is that his hair was in disarray, his clothes were in a mess and he looked like a man possessed. He walked to them holding something in his right fist and before Jensen could react Jared was staying in front of him protecting him from his own father.
“Dad how could you?” Jared asked anger clear in his voice. “I’ve trusted you.”
“So the little brat remembered. I was so happy with his amnesia, but no! It didn’t last long of course. You, son, you had to ruin it all. A few weeks with you and the bad luck it’s on us again!”
“You never believed in any of that dad.” Jensen could tell that Jared was in shock.
“So tell me, Jensen, what exactly did you remember?” He asked ignoring Jared.
“I remember about the night you paid a couple of guys to beat me up.” Jensen stated firmly. “I was coming from soccer practice and these two guys I’ve never seen before gave me the beating of a life time... and the only thing they told me was that you wanted me out of your son’s life. They said that if I stayed you would find a way to put my father in jail. He owed you a lot of money back then. I can remember that now. If I took all my things and moved to Dallas that same night the debt would be forgiven.”
“My God.” Jared whispered.
“Of course. I left I had no other choice.” Jensen completed.
“How can you explain this dad? How?”
“I had to. If he stayed here any longer you were going to run away with him and that couldn’t be. They would win. Our family need its heir. The only way to escape the curse was to defeat the other family and we were so close... so close.”
“What are you talking about?” Jared asked confused.
“Your mother was just like you. Friendly with the bunch of them. She was best friends with his mother. Against my will, I told her that even after becoming a Padalecki, one of us, she could remain friends with his mother. My mistake. She died when you were twelve, victim of the curse.”
“That’s madness. Black magic and curses don’t exist. You know that.” Jared tried to reason with his dad.
“You are so wrong. We almost won, Jared. The black magic was strong in me and his father?” He pointed at Jensen. “He was too weak to even try. I started simply. Read a few lines of the book at midnight and their economical problems started. The blood of a black rooster with the right words and your father was suddenly ill.”
“You’ve lost your mind that’s not possible.” Jensen stated firmly.
Clearly Jared’s father had gone insane.
“I thought I wasn’t going to need magic with pretty Jensen. He was always so weak. But sending him to Dallas hadn’t been sufficient. Sure enough, one day Jared received a letter inviting him to visit Dallas... and that just couldn’t happen.”
“You stole my mail? Dad what happened to you? Can’t you see? You’re not okay.”
“I was perfectly fine. It took me a little while to get the right ingredients, but when I was ready, it was my most perfect ritual. I thought to myself that without his memories he couldn’t possibly have a reason to return here. But no. He had to be stubborn like his mother.”
“Dad you need help. You’re not making any sense. You need to stay calm we’re going to help you.” Jared stated softly.
“It was an accident. A drunk driver hit my car. There was nothing about black magic.” Jensen took a deep breath trying to reason everything.
“You don’t have to believe in it to make it real. You’ve been lucky so far but I’m out of patience.” He closed his eyes and start murmuring incomprehensible words.
Jensen would never confess but he felt fear in the pit of his belly. Jared moved in the direction of his father determined to put some sense into him.
“Stay away, son. You have denied this family its victory for long enough.” With a quick movement of his leg he tripped Jared forward and moved his closed fist in the direction of Jensen’s head.
Jensen closed his eyes fearing the results of any possible magic. But nothing happened and Jensen opened his eyes to see a familiar figure standing close to them.
“No! You’ve ruined it!” Jared’s father screamed.
“Stephanie.” Jared called from his place on the ground.
“I knew he would try something stupid.” Stephanie stated as she forced his hand open and black, glittery sand fell on the ground. “He’s been terrified of the curse all his life. I won’t say it hasn’t affected me either but I believe my son has lost his mind.”
“I’m not crazy! You’ll see! I’m going to evoke a curse so big it will be my last.” He tried to get away from Stephanie’s hold but she was not letting him go.
“Oh dad. What happened to you?” Jared murmured in such a sad tone that Jensen felt the echo of the same emotions in is own heart.
“I’m going to call for help. I don't think it safe to leave him alone in that house anymore.” Stephanie was crying and so was Jared.
They moved him to the house, trying to appease his confused mind. Jensen stayed outside for a little longer, trying to understand what just happened; looking at the black sparkly sand shining in the moon light and wondering what other acts of madness this man had done.
“Black magic.” Jensen murmured.
Was it really possible?
The mere thought made him tremble. He didn't want to know the answer. Without looking back, he walked as fast as he could until he was safely inside.
