Chapter Five
For a few blissful weeks Jensen forgot about all his problems. He worked at the ranch as little as possible, without raising much suspicion, and spent the rest of the time with Jared. He was surprised when the burning passion didn’t diminish at each encounter. Actually, the more they got to know each other the more Jensen was sure that Jared was the person he had been looking for ever since he had lost his memory.
All the signs seemed to point out that Jared felt the same way. All week he asked all kinds of questions about Jensen’s life in Dallas and seemed genuinely happy when Jensen did something exactly like he used to do when they were kids. And to their surprise there were many. Jared also spent much of the time remembering episodes of their childhood. He told Jensen about the first time they had met and when they had kissed for the first time. Jensen noticed that he didn’t talk as much about Jensen’s departure and the time close to that event, and Jensen could easily understand why.
To keep everybody in town from knowing what was happening, Jensen and Jared kept meeting in the most unusual places. Some of them were the same places where ten years ago they would meet to be together. It was surreal for Jensen when he thought about it, to be reliving what he had forgotten. The truth was that he had never felt more alive in his entire life and returning to Dallas was the last thing on his mind.
Unfortunately life forced him to face reality. On that exact morning Jensen received a letter from a local bank, he needed to pay a mortgage worth $75,000 and he had one month to get the money. The bill had come out of nowhere, he had been sure that all the debts were under control. He didn’t know where else to get the money, he had done everything he could so far to pay the bills, but this extremely high amount was impossible to get in such a short notice. Jensen called the local bank and tried to negotiate a new date, but the manager was adamant about recovering the money and once more Jensen felt like cursing Snyder and its habitants.
While he drove to the place were he was going to meet Jared that night, he was more than depressed and a little desperate. It was an old cabin that belonged to the Padalecki family. It was in the middle of the woods and was only used during the hunting season, during the rest of the year Jared used the place to get away from the ranch and indulged in one of his favourite hobbies, painting.
This last bit of information had surprised Jensen. In his first impression he has pictured Jared as a strong muscled Snyder man, but Jared was actually very sensitive and extremely smart. He had studied Agronomy for years and has incorporated some new techniques on the Padalecki ranch. His knowledge of art had come purely from curiosity, Jared told him that he bought books and tried new techniques on his own. This seemed to bond them closer together, because Jensen also shared a passionate love for photography.
Jensen was surprised when he reached the place. He had never been here before, had only heard about if from his conversations with Jared. The house made completely of wood was impressive and looked taken out of a movie. It was far from being a big house, but the small cabin had a cosy look.
Jensen wasn’t surprised to notice that the door was unlocked. Very few places in Snyder were and a house in the woods had no reason to be different. Jensen opened the door and looked around. The place was very simply decorated, with a sofa in front of a fireplace, bookcases filled with books and rugs covering the entire floor. There was a kitchenette on the right, with stools and a heater. At the back of the room there was stairs to the upper level. Jensen noticed that Jared had left his jeep’s keys on the counter.
“Jared?” Jensen asked out lout.
“Up here!” He heard the distant answer.
Jensen climbed the stairs and found himself in a big bedroom. The bed was placed against the far wall, next to a door that led to a bathroom. Near the windows there were dozens of paintings placed against the wall. There were so many that Jensen could only see the ones placed in front. Jared stood behind a table top easel focusing on a panting Jensen couldn’t see.
“Right on time.” Jared raised his right arm inviting Jensen to move closer.
“You know I always am.” Jensen forced a smile and accepted the kiss Jared placed on his lips.
“Look what I’ve found.” Jared’s right arm was now encircling him.
Jensen finally looked at the painting. It took him a few seconds to realize that it was him in the painting. Not really him, but a younger version of himself. The technique wasn’t brilliant but the resemblances were there.
“It’s me.” Jensen whispered, his head resting on Jared’s shoulder.
“Painted by myself when we were twelve.” Jared kissed his forehead. “I guess I lost it in on purpose a few years ago. I didn’t like to see it. It reminded me too much…”
Jensen let his left hand rub against Jared’s back and the brown haired man smiled.
“I’m so glad you’re back.” Jared kissed him like he always did.
Every time they were together Jared would say this same phrase and Jensen would always answer with the same thing.
“I’m glad too.” Jensen said in return.
“What’s the matter?” Jared’s eyes searched his face.
“Nothing, just tired.” Jensen hid his face on Jared’s shoulder.
“Don’t lie to me.” Jared touched Jensen chin lightly. “I know you too well.”
Jensen was forced to smile. He had fooled his mother that evening when she had asked him the same question and yet, he wasn’t able to lie properly to Jared.
“Come on, what’s bothering you?” Jared asked softly. “Is it me? Just because I invited you here doesn’t mean anything. We won’t do anything you’re not ready for…”
Jensen chuckled at Jared’s words and the brown haired man looked offended for a second.
“It’s not that at all.” Jensen caressed Jared’s face. “I’ve been longing for some quality time together.”
“Then what is it?” Jared’s gaze focused on him. “You’re scaring me.”
“It’s about my ranch.” Jensen admitted.
“Let’s go downstairs and talk near the fire.” Jared suggested.
They both sat on the sofa and Jared waited for Jensen to explain him what was happening.
“I got bad news today. Apparently there was one debt that escaped my knowledge. I received a letter this morning and now I have a month to find $75,000. There’s no way I’m going to be able to find that much money. The bank won’t allow me to renegotiate
the debt or the payments and…”
“Damn.” Jared murmured. “What bank is it?”
“The Geffersons.” Jensen explained.
“Those guys won’t give you a chance. They’ll close the ranch in less than a month if you don’t pay them.”
“Can they really do that?” Jensen asked worried.
“They’re very influential in this area, there’s nothing they can’t do…” Jared sighed loudly. “If it was a smaller amount I could lend it to you easily, but this much money I’ll need a few days…”
“I can’t let you do that.” Jensen shook his head. “It’s a dangerous thing to mix money with a relationship. Not to mention that I have no idea how long it would be until I could pay you back. If I’ll ever be able to pay you back.”
“But you have no other way to pay it!” Jared held Jensen’s hands in his. “Jen if you don’t pay them you and your mum will be living in the streets in less than two months.”
“This is a very bad idea.” Jensen kept shaking his head. “I shouldn’t have told you.”
“Don’t be silly, you did well telling me. I’m the only one who can help you.”
“I can’t accept it Jared, it’s a lot of money… We’ve been together for less than a month, I love you but…”
“You love me?” Jared’s smile lit up the whole room.
“I… I do.” Jensen was surprised that the words had slip out of his mouth and he blushed. “I was planning to tell you tonight, just not like this…”
Jared interrupted his babblings with a sudden kiss, pressing him against the sofa. He felt the passion and the love he felt returned in the kiss they shared, but he wasn’t surprised, Jared had always loved him. He probably had never truly loved anybody else all his life and the thought sent shivers of passion through Jensen’s body.
“Jensen I love you so very much.” Jared held him close. “And I know. This is all too fast, all too serious for you, but please… please let me help you.”
“Jared we shouldn’t.” Jensen murmured.
Jared moved off the sofa and knelt on the floor.
“Please, let me give you the money. I swear on my mother’s grave that I’ll never ask for it in return. If you decide you’re tired of me and went away I won’t ask for the money back. But please let me help you, otherwise there won’t be any relationship. They’ll take you away from me, I’m sure!”
“Jared you can’t tell me those things. Of course I’ll pay you back, no matter what happens.” Jensen stated indignantly.
“Does that mean you’ll let me lend you the money?” Jared was still waiting for an answer.
“Yes, yes. You’re right I’m no good to anybody in jail or living in the streets.” Jensen sighed loudly, afraid of thinking of the consequences of this action.
“I’ll call the bank tomorrow morning and I’ll tell you something then.” Jared sat back on the sofa.
“I feel terrible.” Jensen hugged Jared.
“Don’t! This is nothing. I would do anything to keep you close to me.” Jared took a deep breath. “I didn’t lie when I said I loved you.”
“I love you too.” Jensen held his gaze, trying to show just how deeply he felt.
“Then trust me. We’ll deal with this together.” Jared kissed him again silencing any rational thoughts.
