So, by now I assume everyone has heard about the Star Wars Episode VII casting announcement.
Really? REALLY?! It's 20FUCKING14 and we can still only cast ONE female character? I just...I'm done. I'm so fucking done.
This is seriously pissing me off so much. I wanted more. I EXPECTED more. I was hoping more than anything that this next series of films would the ones to break the 'one female character per trilogy' curse that has haunted the franchise. The filmmakers have heard the complaints about the lack of diversity in the previous films. They don't care apparently. This announcement shows that. JJ and and crew still believe that this franchise will forever be a Boys Only club. This franchise that I have loved since I was a child is very clearly stating that I don't belong. And that's heartbreaking.
I've been told that I should calm down. That I shouldn't freak out before seeing the film. That more female characters might be added later. I will praise the heavens if more female characters are announced. But I'm not holding my breath. It was very clearly stated that this is the main cast. Why is it so hard for 50% of the god damn population to be represented well in these films? While I love Leia and Padme I was hoping that these new movies would introduce a whole new array of main female characters (note: not voiceless extras). I want female smugglers, bounty hunters, military officers, Sith Lords, and pilots. Above all, I want a female Jedi Knight. REPRESENTATION FUCKING MATTERS.
I guess I could turn to the Expanded Universe which is filled with so many diverse and interesting female characters BUT OH WAIT THEY JUST DECLARED THAT ALL OF THAT IS NO LONGER CANNON.
I'm out. I'll watch the new film but I'm going to be judging it SO FUCKING HARD.
