My thoughts on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - let me show you them.
Sadly, this film left me with conflicting emotions. On the one hand, it was great to see Jack and some of the more notable characters together again. On the other hand, I felt like it was missing a big part of what made the first three films so enjoyable for me. What that is exactly, I don't know. There was the obvious lack of Will and Elizabeth. I know I'm in the minority here but, honestly, IDGAF. Their story is what really drew me back to the theater year after year.
EPIC ROMANCE IS EPIC! HATERS GONNA HATE.
Anyway, other than that, I'm trying to lay my finger on what exactly I thought was missing. Maybe it's just the fact that I have to get used to a whole new crew and set of characters. I had gotten so accustomed to the familiar faces of the past films. I miss Cotton, Pintel, Ragetti, Norrington and Tia Dalma. I knew the last two weren't coming back (for obvious reasons), but I was holding out hope for the other three. If they do get around to making two more films (which I'm sure they will in due time), maybe I'll feel more connected to this new trilogy. At the moment, it's currently taking some adjusting on my part.
Another reason I felt disconnected was that there was no real need for this series to continue, because they wrapped up the third one so nicely. Due to this, it kind of felt like one big glorified fan fiction. This was even more felt once it's reveled in the credits that this film is actually loosely based on a
book by the same name written by Tim Powers.
Alright, I'll stop being a Negative Nancy and get on to the parts that I did enjoy:
JESUS TAP DANCING CHRIST. I LOOOOOOOOOVED the mermaids. This scene might possibly be my favorite out of the entire film. I already have a fascination with them, so it was great to see some on the big screen. I loved their tails. I believe they were all pretty much CG, but they were so fluid and beautiful. And then this happens:
"MERMAIDS! THE BEAUTIFUL PIRANHAS OF THE SEA." - Quote courtesy of my boyfriend.
That was an awesome twist. Those mermaids were bad ass! It was original to many myths about mermaids as well. They're not all Ariel's hoping to be a part of your world. They're viscous sirens who will tear you limb from limb. The sub-plot between Syrena and Philip was okay, but kind of bland. I really want to know how she "saved" him, though. I'm sticking with the theory that she turned him into a merman and they're living happily ever after somewhere. Either that or he's fish food.
I went into the theater really wanting to like Angelica, and I did for the most part. Sadly, she came off a little bit Marry Sue-ish. This tends to happen when you have a film franchise that tends to stick to
The Smurfette Principal, so it's not her fault. It was great seeing a female kick ass from the get go, unlike Elizabeth's character. I loved the banter and sexual tension between Angelica and Jack. The scene where he professes his love for her and than quickly turns around with "gotta go!" had me in stitches. I think it was also the abrupt end of the romantic orchestral score that did it in for me. I wasn't too pleased with him just leaving her on that island, so I hope she causes some trouble for him in the next film.
Barbossa and Gibbs! I love you both, don't ever change! In a sea of fresh faces, it was good to see those two still being the bad asses that we know and love. When Barbossa changes back into his pirate regalia at the end of the film I did a little happy dance on the inside. PUT THAT HAT BACK ON, BARBOSSA! YOU LOOK LIKE A FIERCE BITCH, BABY!
The Fountain of Youth was really not how I expected it to be at all. I laughed hysterically when it was revealed that the only reason that the Spanish were searching for it was to destroy it. Seriously? After all that you're going to turn it to rubble? I also loved when Groves whipped out a flag and claimed the fountain for England. All I could think of was Eddie Izzard's standup.
"We stole countries with the cunning use of flags!" I think that's all I wanted to discuss for now. I'm sure some other interesting tidbits will come to me later. I leave you with this:
In other news, my lower back is currently causing me to want to punch it in it's figurative face. Although, in retrospect, I don't think that would do any good. Dear Back: I don't know what I did to upset you, but could you do me a solid and stop throbbing in pain? It would mean a lot. Thanks, bro!
My dance class is going to be performing at a local Art in the Park festival next month. It was kind of a last minute thing, but it will be great advertising for my teacher and the class. We're going to be doing a 24 minute group piece that will be half choreography and half improv. I have a feeling it will be nerve wracking, but also a ton of fun. Betsey wants us all to be in red, so I got to pick out a new costume last week. YAY for new sparkly and shiny things! :D
