Holy crap. Well, I guess I am so very glad that (as usual) I came to the fandom late. The secondary characters often do end up more popular because the show writers haven't pinned them into a corner and explored every aspect of their lives. Face it, Scott is boring. We know how he's going to react and he's the least layered character on the show. But he is also a Gary Stu, so I guess I can see why the showrunner got butt hurt. I'm not sorry that they backed off the Derek/Stiles vibe because Stiles pushed a rape victim too hard and Derek used werewolf strength to hurt Stiles too often for my taste (something I address in my story), but I do see those two has having a great brother vibe. Not healthy as life partners, but always willing to have each other's backs. Now, with some therapy or self-reflection I could see them making a good couple, but as they existed on the show, it was a little uncomfortable. And the bite Scott set up? Rapy vibes. Yuck.
Actually, that finally explains the Lydia/Stiles thing which made NO sense to me. None. Let Stiles be happily bisexual. I really missed Danny after he graduated. That show needed Danny and Stiles and Derek to be interesting, and after they left, the show had to bring in bigger and bigger bad guys until it was a joke.
That was another thing that the creator liked to gloss over or try to say 'you guys are overreacting' - all the fucked up, rapey shite in the show. I mean - we START with a kid who was basically stalked and sexually violated by an adult woman, who is then repeatedly forced to physically do stuff he doesn't consent to, including...having sex with someone who uses magic on him to make him consent....
And none of it is ever mentioned, or called out, or anything, and fans who didn't like it got dismissed or harangued. So gross.
Scott was a super Gary Stu. I pretty much dismissed him from episode one, and then gradually grew to just loathe the character and his super-special...special..ness.
And the endless 'must go kissy-face with my new girlfriend while my other friends are fighting for their lives!!' Man, that got old.
I enjoyed Derek and Stiles as a 'ship because Stiles on the show had his moments of actually *getting* wtf was going on with Derek, and that can be extrapolated nicely into fannon fic that is a lot more enjoyable than the canon train wreck. They have their issues for sure, and the best fic doesn't ignore them.
I also, over the course of the show, got to really enjoy the actors, who were pretty cool and fun as just people, so that made it easier for me to like that 'ship more.
The actors are charming, and I have seen a couple of Derek/Stiles stories that dealt with the issues head on and created a beautiful relationship, so I know it can be done, but I want to wrap Derek up and protect him from anyone who is too emotionally rough with him, and sometimes Stiles is a bit of a bulldozer.
