This class I’m taking is great for ideas, but I don’t have time to write any of them. Does anyone want a plot bunny??
In World War II, a German career officer with a reputation for studying hard and being ethical got assigned to collect intelligence against the USSR. Colonel Reinhard Gehlen and his Foreign Armies East (Fremde Heere Ost or FHO) not only managed a way to track most of the Soviet divisions, but he saw the coming fall of German and the rising danger of the USSR. He took all the German intel and hid it in lockboxes in order to offer it to the Americans or British. He and his staff ended up in POW camps, and he couldn’t interest anyone in his work until the USSR occupied Iran and refused to get out. Then the CIA showed interest in Gehlen and his network of spies named WALLI I. Eventually, the CIA set them back up in Germany on a short leash. Gehlen actually ended up doing a lot of work to stop the Soviets.
So, the Sentinel part.
I can just imagine Jim as an officer under Gehlen, working to identify and stop Soviet forces. When the war ends, I can see him in a POW camp, stewing in guilt as he finds out what the German army was doing in other parts of the country. I can see his defensiveness and his internal angst. I can also see him as unfailingly loyal to Gehlen, a man who was serving the wrong side, but who was trying to fix his mistakes. I can see Jim driving himself harder and harder to try and prove that he is not a Nazi, and I can see his jaw twitch every time someone says “Jew” or “concentration camp.” The CIA assigned an operative to every division head in order to ensure that Gehlen was serving American interests, and I can see Jim, a division head, being assigned a half-Jew CIA observer. Yep, Blair. Blair, a man who had spied for the Allies and put his life on the line, would be assigned to handle Jim. The two of them would have every reason in the world to hate each other, but you know they wouldn’t be able to do it. Their innate love for each other would win in the end.
Now, I wouldn’t have this bunny without the class, but with the class, I don’t have time to write the bunny. If anyone feels like writing this, I’d love to read it. Sadly, I just don’t have time to write it.
