I see so much of myself in Shoshanna, and I really want her to have a bigger role next season. Zosia Mamet is just perfect. When she gets high on crack and is running through the streets, I laughed so hard, I cried.
I literally streamed the entire season yesterday, and I now cannot wait for it to come back. Given all the shit people said about it, I expected it to be really bad, but I love it. (And am also slightly ashamed at how much I see myself in some of the less good characteristics of the characters)
Ugh, so I adore this show and I relate so hard to each of the characters at times, but mainly to Shoshana because of what you've nailed on the head right here
Shoshanna is an excellent example of societal pressures an expectations boiled down into one neurotic undergrad.
It's not just that she thinks society expects to have had sex, but she thinks that society will value her less because she hasn't. Her status as a virgin makes her worth less that other woman. It makes her the weird one in her group of friends. It makes her the girl guys don't want to be with because no one wants to have sex with a virgin. It's like there's this window of time where everyone has sex and, once you miss it, it's gone. I just have a lot of feelings and sympathy for this girl.
When she tries to hook up with the guy from camp and he refuses to have sex with her until she's done it first, I had such sympathy for her because, at least in my experience, once you've hit a certain part of your 20s, sex is just expected. If you're not doing it, there's something wrong with you, and, if you're not willing to do it, no one is interested. It's like when Marnie is telling Jessa about having sex for the first time at 14 and then not feeling the need to do it again for a long time; some women get it out of the way just to do so and, if you're like Shoshanna and want to wait until something good comes along, you end up the freak.
I have so many Girls feelings, and I'm so glad other people are watching it!

it's so rare we see female characters in media who aren't super comfortable with their sexuality but really want to be.
THIS (y) I think that may be the reason why I'm so fond of her (especially as someone who feels more or less the same way).
