Oh my gosh, I totally remember adoring this movie when I was...ten? Eleven? I forget when it came out (but if Devon Sawa was still in that gorgeous phase, then around then).
Especially in pop culture, the women who get the most praise are the ones who adopt traditionally masculine characteristics; moreso lately, I've started to see praise for the traditionally female characters. But there is still this stubborn belief that some people hold that, if you are a "strong" character, it's weak to show your femininity, and I have never understood that; it's just a different sort of misogyny, and, what's worse, it's the sort of internalized misogyny women aren't even aware they hold.
A thousand Amens to that, and I've sort of been composing a post in my head that I've been jokingly calling Why Wearing High Heels Kicks Ass, but you said it all much better right there.
And as the best example I can think of, I refer you to the lady in my icon.
I don't know if this makes any sense but the gist of my thinking was...
You know, it's something that...like, in the past year especially, a lot of my fandoms have had swordfights or werewolves or gangsters or something so everyone eventually had to literally learn how to 'kick ass' or else, but in 'normal' life, 'real life', it doesn't usually work that way. People go to work, and come home to their families or hang out with their friends and read the newspaper and cook dinner and pay their bills without incident of some lunatic (vampire, whatever) trying to attack them, so I feel like fandom gets bored with the women who don't get to do much, in that regard. But I do feel like living a quiet, ordinary life while being a good person with integrity is still pretty 'kick-ass', in its own way.
And I feel like there's very much this "turning your nose up" towards women who don't want to take over the world, who want to live normal lives and achieve the benchmarks of a "normal" life, as if what they are doing isn't just as worthy as anything else.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Becky rocks! I loved this movie SO FREAKING MUCH when I was growing up. I loved absolutely everything about it. GUH! I am so nostalgic right now I don't know what to do with myself.
