Hello from another newbie, my name is DJ, 38 year old writer working on a first novel and easily distracted by short stories and the long notes detailing them.
Some of my influences include Virginia Woolf, Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Robbins and Jeannette Winterson.
I've been a writer for a good 20 years now and had some smaller pieces published early on, though I'm not sure I relate to any of that now. I've spent many years out in the 'world' not directly pursuing my goals, though helping others I hope. I've been steadily finding my voice and gaining confidence in the meantime and look forward to sharing with a new group of fresh minds. Reading is my first love so almost anything put in front of me is welcome.
I'd also like to say, and this is paraphrasing an old teacher of mine, that while I love words and wordplay and appreciate the rules of grammar, I do not necessarily believe there are 'rules in a knife fight.' I have a deep appreciation for the experimental and the personal and hope to read more as I go along.
I suppose my overall goal here is to develop relationships in sharing my work with others to better understand what I do - and understand others in return.
Much thanks.
