These things always start in whispers over the fence. Not from people who live right where it happens, but one or two steps away.

"My son works at Blockbuster, and he says that she comes in regularly to rent giant stacks of movies."

"Once a week, like clockwork. Mostly vegetables, and she's always dressed with hoods and gloves. She doesn't talk much, not really. Pays in cash."

"You can't get too close to the buildings out there, of course, but there's this ridge...you can see her if you sit up there and hide a little bit."

They start with a little bit of litter left in the desert, and a cellphone photo snapped of friends with something odd in the background. They start with rumor, and speculation, and internet posts wondering if maybe - just maybe - something is up.
